A retired farmer who has an 'issue with motorcyclists' when he 'lapses off his medication' has been banned from driving for four years, at Naas District Court.

The 71-year-old with an address in  Co Wicklow,  faced a charge of dangerous driving, at Valleymount, in 2017.

Garda evidence outlined how the man who suffers from a mental health condition 'is on medication.'

The court heard how the accused is on medication for 30 to 40 years but when he relapses, 'he has an issue with people on motorbikes.'

The Garda outlined how when the accused has relapsed, he feels that motorcyclists drive too fast and so veers on the other side of the road, towards the motorcyclists.

Evidence was given that no injuries have been sustained.

Garda evidence said: "In every other facet of his life, when he is well, he is fine."

The court heard how he has previous convictions for no insurance, driving without a licence and dangerous driving.

Evidence was heard how he resides with his 92-year-old mother and has several siblings.

Defence Solicitor, Tony Hanahoe, said: "When he is on his medication, he is a most pleasant man to deal with. When he is off his medication, he has an issue with motorcyclists on mountain passes."

Defence added: "The doctor says at this current time, he is unfit to drive."

Defence said that the best possible option would be a four years driving ban.

The court heard how the retired farmer lives on a pension of €300 per week.

Judge Desmond Zaidan ordered that the accused is banned from driving for four years.
