A number of cars involved in a crash on the M7 between Naas and Newbridge have now been moved to the hard shoulder.
Gardai and ambulance crews are at the scene.
There are delays along the motorway stretching back to Junction 12 Newbridge.
Local traffic around the Curragh Roundabout and the Moorefield Road out of Newbridge town is also impacted.
Meanwhile thousands of motorists are on the move home following the bank holiday weekend and Gardai and the AA have warned road users to slow down and always wear seat belts.
