Kildare County Council are hopeful that a pedestrian footbridge will be installed in Maynooth in the coming years after they stated that plans are already underway for the project.
The footbridge will be located on the busy Mill Street in the town, where Dunnes Stores is located. Cllr Naoise Ó'Cearúil raised the issue at a meeting of the Maynooth Municipal District, stating that the vast increase in pedestrians means hat progress needs to be made on project.
KCC said that funding would be required from the National Transport Authority, but they are ready to commence the design phase.
"The Maynooth Municipal District Engineer confirms that a pedestrian footbridge was approved as part of the Part 8 proposals for Phase 5 of the North-South Corridor," read the council's report.
"A detailed design of this phase will commence in the summer 2018.
"Funding from the National Transportation Authority (NTA) is required for the construction of this phase of the North-South Corridor."
