Bluebells are bursting out in the woods of Killinthomas, just out the Edenderry Road from Rathangan, in perfect time for this year’s ‘Bluebells & Buskers’ Festival.
Scheduled for Sunday, May 1, the woods of Killinthomas will resonate with the sounds and voices of many local musicians whilst the smell of Leo Mather’s barbeque will waft through the leafy forest and tempt man and beast alike!
This will be the fourth annual hosting of the unique event, dedicated to the memory of the late Jimmy O’Loughlin.
Local sculptor Brian O'Loughlin said: “The event was created to celebrate the memory and legacy of our father, Jimmy OLoughlin of Cappanargid, a former county councillor, who loved walking the woods and also, a man who devoted his life to community and culture.”
Along with extended family and friends, the annual event is supported by local community volunteers and committee members of the RYARC Centre, the parish community centre.
Fianna Fail Deputy Fiona O'Loughlin said: “This time of year, Killinthomas Woods is covered under a vivid carpet of bluebells and wild garlic and a wonderful setting for our festivities.”
Visitors and locals are invited to participate in an open air celebration on Sunday, May 1 with food served from 1.45pm including Leo’s Barbeque, and teas and snacks served at €2. ‘Freudian Slip’, a dynamic band will perform at the main stage area whilst walkers are encouraged to take paths through the wood and experience music from an impressive array of musicians including Conor Mahoney and Peter Byrne, Pud Barrett, Whizz O’Rourke, Mary O’Loughlin, Peter Nolan, Roisín McAlinden, Bunoscionn and the wonderful Allenwood Choir, amongst others.
