Captain Deirdre Carbery of the Defence Forces was master of ceremonies outside the GPO yesterday for the state's lavish centenary commemoration of the 1916 Rising.

The Army officer also paid tribute to an ancestor who fought in one of the Dublin garrisons during the Easter uprising.

Capt Carbery, from Naas said she felt a huge connection to her great-grandfather, who served with rebel leader Eamonn Ceannt during the Rising.

She added: "My dad was in the army for 42 years as well. He was here today watching this and it is a nice family connection."

Describing the atmosphere of the day, she explained: "...you could feel the emotion with everyone."
