A 55-year-old man who Gardaí stopped when they saw him driving at 10km per hour got banned from driving for four years at Naas District Court.

The Tallaght man faced charges at Naas District Court for driving under the influence of an intoxicant on the M7 Northbound, at Ballymany.

In court, Garda Lisa Boshell said that the car was causing a 'big line of traffic to build up.'

Garda Boshell arrested him on suspicion of being under the influence of an intoxicant while driving.

She said: "His pupils were dilated and his speech was slurred."

Defence Barrister, Gerard Kennedy, outlined how the accused has no front teeths which causes his speech to slur.

Senior Forensic Analyst Shauna McCarthy outlined that while results showed that the accused had no alcohol in his system, there were traces of cannabis.

In court, the accused said that he was driving slowly as he was going on to the entrance ramp of a motorway.

The accused asked why he was allowed to dry home if they had a suspicion that he was driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

Evidence was given that he was brought to the station and there he gave a urine sample.

Defence asked that the charges be struck out, arguing that there was not enough evidence that he was driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

The court heard how the unemployed father of one has 18 previous convictions, including six for road traffic and none for drug driving.

Judge Brian O'Shea imposed a four year driving ban, he was convicted and fined €500 with six months to pay.
