Gardai in Naas are urging women shopping in supermarkets to be aware of opportunistic criminals loitering in the carparks.

This warning issued by Sgt Gerry Goode, comes after a woman was targeted at the car park of Lidl, Newhall, Naas,  on Saturday.

The woman was returning her trolley to the bay between 12.45pm and 1pm. She left her handbag on the boot of the car.

When she returned it had been stolen.

According to Sgt Goode, thefts of handbags in supermarket carparks around Naas is a 'regular occurrence.'

He said: "There are people sitting watching out for vulnerable women with children or lots of shopping. People need to be careful, this type of crime is increasing."
