A homeless Co Kildare family have been forced to stay in a hotel in Co Laois despite their children attending school at The Curragh.

Fianna Fáil TD for Kildare South, Fiona O’Loughlin is now calling on the Minister to do more to support families and individuals in emergency accommodation. These calls have come from an influx of calls to her office from homeless families and from latest homeless figures that are showing a month on month increase in homelessness

O’Loughlin said: “I am continually assisting people who call into my four constituency offices that are on the verge of becoming homeless or are already homeless and looking for support. The stories I have heard from each individual family in emergency accommodation is frustrating and hugely disheartening. One parent called me recently as they were placed into a hotel in Laois while their children were in school in the Curragh with no transport to bring their children to school."

She said:"There are families going to be eating on their beds this Christmas and worse, some will be sleeping rough while services and supports are reduced during the holiday season. We must do more to support those at risk or already in emergency accommodation so that they have accommodation to allow families have a roof over their heads, a place to cook meals, and a secure place so they can send the children to school without having to travel long distances each day”.
