An army officer  who appeared at Naas District Court today said that his drunken abusive behaviour was 'one night of madness.'

Evidence was given by Inspector Gerry Egan that the accused, a 23- year-old man,  took a chair from outside a cafe, moved down the street with it and opened a can of beer at Market Square, Kildare town,  at 3.30am.

Inspector Egan said: "I told him to go home, and ten minutes later, he was trying to get into the local niteclub. He became very abusive."

The court heard how there were no previous convictions.

Defence Solicitor, Matthew Byrne, outlined how the army officer is due to be called abroad in three months. He said that the offence took place before the accused joined the army.

In court, the accused said that it was 'one night of madness.'

Judge Desmond Zaidan said: "You are an army officer, you should know better."

He was ordered to pay €500 to the Irish Kidney Association and was given four months to pay.
