The Deputy Mayor of Naas is appealing for CCTV linking with Gardaí to monitor all the roads around the district.
Fine Gael Deputy Mayor Fintan Brett has been talking with Naas Gardaí about the possibility of applying for a grant to assist in covering the costs of the CCTV, that could cost about half a million euros.
Speaking to KildareNow, Deputy Brett is hopeful that funds amassed through the Local Property Tax could go towards the costs of funding CCTV on roads around the county.
He said: "This would be more traffic orientated. This will be looking at giving cover to arterial routes."
According to Deputy Brett, the Local Property Tax for the Naas Municipal District gathers between €400, 000 to €500,000 annually.
Deputy Brett said that over the past few years, renewal works on roads including resurfacing has been carried out to over 20 roads around the county.
He is now hoping that next Tuesday Naas Gardaí along with Kildare County Council can lodge plans to apply for funding to cover the costs of CCTV around the Naas Municipal District.
Deputy Brett listed a number of roads suitable for CCTV including Kilteel, Beggars End and Halverstown Cross, but essentially anticipates that all of the Naas Municipal District will be under Garda CCTV surveillance.
