A 40-year-old Co Kildare father told Naas District Court how he could not afford painkillers after a barbed fence went through his knee-cap.

The man, on crutches, appeared before Naas District Court on Thursday. His partner also appeared on Misuse of Drugs charges on the same date, charged with being found in possession of €20 worth of cannabis, on November 5, 2016, at their home in Co Kildare.

Inspector Oliver Henry outlined that the accused was found in possession of €20 worth of cannabis after a search was carried out in his home.

The Inspector outlined that the accused has 12 previous convictions, the last one dating back to 2007.

Defence Séamus Boyle said:"He has been working full-time. He is of good character and has stopped smoking."

Judge Desmond Zaidan said: "Both parents are smoking dope. They are spending money that is going to criminals."

The accused told the court that he is 'so much pain.'

He said: "I did not have a medical card at the time."

Judge Zaidan said: "I am concerned about the kids. "

The Judge has ordered Probation Supervision for the next four months.

Judge Zaidan said: "No excuses, if you continue like this, you will lose your children to the state. I want them to behave themselves and ensure that they are looking after their kids."

The father has been ordered to reappear before Naas District Court on April 12, next, for a Probation Report.
