Four men were arrested last night in relation to a large scale investigation that Gardaí are currently carrying out.
Gardaí have set into their winter phase of Operation Thor, and they are targeting a number of travelling gangs that are operating throughout the Leinster region, including one which is raiding rural areas on the Kildare-Laois border.
The arrests last night came after Gardaí in Mullingar were alerted to a burglary in the area, and from there a co-ordinated operation between Gardaí in several regions was carried out. The gang was intercepted in Lucan last night and were detained.
All four men are the members of an extended family, range in age from 22 to 61, and are known to Gardaí.
Assistant Garda Commissioner John O'Driscoll, who is in charge of special crime operations, has been focusing on targeting such gangs and efforts are currently being made to ensure that information can be exchanged more readily and easily between Garda regions across Ireland.
