It has been a whirlwind few months for Athy footballer Kevin Feely since he returned to Ireland. After a stint with professional soccer club Newport County in England, the 23-year-old returned to Ireland last summer and his thoughts quickly turned to gaelic football.
Feely was one of Athy's standout performers as the south Kildare club made it to a County Senior Championship final, while his performances also caught the eye of newly appointed Kildare manager Cian O'Neill. Since making his debut for the Lilywhites in the second round of the National Football League against Offaly, Feely has been the county's standout performer while operating in midfield.
He also made it through to a Sigerson Cup final with his college DCU in February, although he was played out of his natural position at full-back. That failed to hamper his influence however, and his fine performances have been rewarded with a place at full-back on the Sigerson Cup team of the year that has been chosen by the Irish Independent.
Feely and his DCU colleagues lost out to UCD in a very tight final last month however. The south Dublin college had three Kildare players involved in the final, with Tommy Moolick, David Hyland and Niall Kelly all featuring, while Naas defender Brian Byrne was also on the panel.
