Breakdown of relationships and housing issues a leading factor in depression - HOPE (D)

Kildare based charity HOPE (D) -"Helping Other People Escape Depression” say relationship breakdowns and housing issues are a key factor in causing parents stress and anxiety.

HOPE (D) was founded in 2003 to support people who are ‘in crisis’ and to help families cope with a family member with depression.  The organisation is committed to providing “empathic services, to help remove the obstacles many individuals or families face when having to seek Mental Health assistance”.

Now HOPE (D) have 8 qualified counsellors to man their helplines. Statistics this year show January and June were the highest months for stress calls received to HOPE (D), with February and July also recording a high demand for the helpline.

“Whilst post-Christmas period is always one of the busiest times for our helpline, June may also be a difficult time for people stressing about exams, etc. However, there is no fixed pattern to the need for HOPE (D)’s services” said Jim Brady of HOPE (D).

“Last year, March and April were particularly demanding.  We receive the highest number of calls from the 18-30 year category but undoubtedly, the breakdown of relationships is a huge factor of stress for people nowadays. When a couple separate and the family home is sold, there are two sets of parents needing rehousing; children not only face emotional trauma but also have to move home”.

As rental costs escalate, the supply far exceeds the demand and more children were recorded as homeless in Ireland in recent years.  To help fund their services, HOPE (D) are planning a 5k Family Fun Run/Walk on Sunday 17 September.

“You’re not alone 5K” will start at 11am sharp, and will commence from the Defence Forces Sports Grounds at the Curragh. Registration at 9:30 - 10:30am; entry €10pp and family rate is €20. See You’re not alone 5km in aid of Hope-D on Facebook.

Before then, HOPE (D) will host a memorial service in the parish church Monastervin on Sunday week, September 10 in conjunction with World Suicide Awareness Day. The service will begin at 8pm sharp and will include a Candle Lit Procession, reflective readings for ‘loved ones passed’ and concludes with a release of balloons. Light refreshments served afterwards with music  provided by Monastervin Gospel Choir.

“HOPE (D) wish to thank Fr Liam Merrigan PP for allowing this event” said Jim Brady of HOPE (D). “Everyone is welcome to the event, especially those who’ve lost loved ones”.

Anyone finding the stresses and strains of modern life too much to bear, can call HOPE (D) at 1800 855 834  or 087 151 3535.  HOPE(D) provide discreet professional Counselling with fully qualified Therapists in warm, welcoming surroundings at Henry Street, Newbridge.
