It has been a whirlwind few months for 20-year-old Athy man Joey Carbery, and the young Leinster star's career has taken another significant upturn.
After starring for Clontarf in the Ulster Bank League final this summer, Carbery then impressed former New Zealand coach Graham Henry when he came to watch Leinster train, before going on to score two tries in a man of the match display on his Pro12 debut for Leinster at the beginning of September.
It has now emerged that Carbery was part of Joe Schmidt's one-day Irish training camp at Carton House on Monday, joining fellow uncapped youngster Darren Sweetnam, who plays on the wing for Munster.
New Zealand born Carbery is not expected to be included in the Irish squad for the clash with the Kiwis in Chicago on November 5, but his inclusion at the one-day get together is a promising sign. Since Ian Madigan left for Bordeaux Beglé at the end of last season, Carbery's prospects of featuring for Leinster have soared. He is now the most likely back-up to Johnny Sexton at provincial level, and Schmidt may soon consider him as third choice for Ireland behind his clubmate and Ulster outhalf Paddy Jackson.
Schmidt usually opts to bring promising young players into these type of get togethers before fully integrating them into the senior squad, and there is every chance that Carbery could play a role for Ireland in the next 12 months if he continues his rapid ascent.
