A Co Kildare Judge warned a Russian man who is residing in the country for two months that if he does not accept 200 hours community service for the theft of a bottle of perfume, he could get 12 months in prison.

Inspector Mel Smyth outlined to Naas District Court today how on August 31, 2016, the accused was seen leaving TK Maxx at Whitewater, Newbridge, with a bottle of perfume worth €25.98.

The court heard that the accused has no previous convictions.

Defence Solicitor, Conal Boyce, said that the accused was trying to 'get brownie points' and the perfume was for his girlfriend.

Judge Desmond Zaidan said: "I feel sorry for his girlfriend. She could have been charged with handling stolen property."

The court heard  how the accused has just been in Ireland for two months.

Judge Zaidan asked that the accused consent to 200 hours community service, adding, 'If he does not like that, I can give him 12 months in prison."

The accused is ordered to undertake 200 hours community service.
