Staff at Tallaght Hospital were forced to close two wards inside the past month due to the outbreak of a potentially deadly superbug.
The bug was first found in August, and resulted in the closures of the Gogarty and Crampton wards, according to the Irish Independent.
It has been confirmed that a number of adult patients have been infected by the CRE infection, which is a Carbapenem resistant enterobacteria. It poses little risk to people who are already in good health, but it can prove deadly to those with low immune systems. It can be passed on through contact with another person, and patients who are at risk in Tallaght Hospital are now being given antibiotics that will help fight off the threat of contracting the bug.
A third ward may need to be closed as it undergoes screening to contain the bug. It has had a knock-on effect to overcrowding in the hospital as there were 27 patients on trolleys at the Dublin hospital yesterday.
