No Shortage of Excitement in Rathcoffey Tournament

The Rathcoffey Annual Bowling Tournament got of to a great start on Thursday 18th with some very exciting and close matches. With eight mats in use it certainly gave spectators plenty of variety with so many matches in progress at any one time.

Same Club v Same Club

Unfortunately the first round draw turned up a real stinker for both the Allen club and the Allenwood club, Allen1 were drawn against Allen3 and Allenwood1 were drawn against Allenwood2, so it was certainly a case of one team from each club exiting the Cup competition and playing in the Shield, such is the luck of the draw.

Caragh Survive Storming Finish

One of the host teams Rathcoffey2 took on Caragh3 in the first match in the Cup, and for most of the match it was the Caragh side that were rampant and it seemed they were heading for a very easy victory.  At the sixth end they were ahead by a massive eight on a scoreline of 10/2.

With only eleven ends in all matches up to the semi-finals instead of the usual fifteen there didn’t seem to be any way back for the hosts. On the next couple of ends they had fought their way back reducing the margin to five. But again Caragh put seven between them and with only two more ends to play, game over, or so we thought. But a storming finish by Rathcoffey had their opponents on the rack, but it was too little to late to save the game, and Caragh will count themselves lucky to survive in a game that they controlled for most of the contest, running out winners on a score of 12/10.

Caragh3: Mick Murphy, Colette Cronin, John Doyle and Pat O’Driscoll.

Rathcoffey2: Carmen Doherty, Breda Byrne, Myra Gavin and Noel Byrne.

Burke’s Display Sees off Prosperous Challenge

In this Cup-tie it was the turn of Prosperous1 to take on the might of Kill CBC. From the start of this match it was the Kill CBC side that dominated matters, and by the end of the fourth end they had accrued a huge lead of ten and holding their opponents scoreless up to that point.

Prosperous were actually playing very well and at times were holding many good bowls in scoring positions, but such was the form of the opposition they were always able to change those scenarios and end up with scores.

Even though Kill CBC were the better team throughout it was the devastating and incredible display of their skip Eddie Burke that was the difference in seeing of a stiff challenge from Prosperous. Final score: Kill CBC 12 Prosperous 6.

Kill CBC: Pat Keenan, Amini Nash, Declan O’Connell and Eddie Burke.

Prosperous1: Nellie Dunney, Zoe Moore, Marie Kelleher and Lily Moore.
