While all the talk surrounds the likes of Pat Hickey, ticket scandals, fixed boxing matches and illegal doping at the Olympic Games in Rio this week, there were another set of games taking place in Athlone that witnessed athletic competitions in their purest form.
The Community Games is into its second weekend in Athlone, and there are high hopes that the numerous Kildare athletes involved can bring home further medals after a brilliant first weekend. A total of 12 golds, one silver and one bronze have been secured so far, and those athletes are due to be honoured at a special reception in Newbridge this week.
The welcome home event will take place on Monday evening at 7.30pm in the Town Hall, and there is sure to be plenty of well known faces present to congragulate the young athletes upon their arrival.
The games continue today and into Sunday, and if the first weekend is anything to go by, there are going to be plenty of mantle pieces weighed down with gold, silver and bronze in towns and villages across Kildare in the near future.
