A Newbridge man broke into a tapas bar and cafe in Naas, the local District Court heard.
Glen Feane (34) of Lakeside Park in Newbridge was described by his solicitor as a 'very nice man' but his heroin addiction forced him to commit burglaries.
Feane was convicted of a break-in at Las Rada Wine and Tapas bar on New Row, Naas on January 2 last.
At 6am on the same date, he also burglared Erica's Coffee Corner run by businesswoman Erica Lukacs on South Main Street in the town.
Feane had cut his hand while breaking the window of the cafe and blood stains left on the premises helped gardai to identify him.
The damage to the cafe's premises cost €800 to fix while the repair bill for a back door at Las Rada was €500.
He was also charged with theft at Tesco on Blessington Road in June last year.
Judge Desmond Zaidan heard Feane had 25 previous convictions including 18 for burglary.
Defence solicitor Conal Boyce said that his client wasn't violent and always broke into premises when they were empty as he didn't want to threaten anybody.
Judge Zaidan said the two businesses may also see their insurance premiums rise because of the break-ins.
He said he had a duty to protect the public and he imposed a sentence of 20 months on the defendant.
