A milkman has been  slammed at Naas District Court for driving at an 'outrageous speed.'

Garda Ronan Mannion outlined how at 10.45pm on January 8, 2016, at the N7, Kill, the accused was driving at 206km/hr, the equivalent of 128miles per hour.

Evidence was given by Garda Mannion that despite following the accused while driving at 220km/hr, he was not gaining.

Garda Mannion told the court how at Castlewarden South, the accused 'encountered heavy traffic' and was forced to slow down in a silver Volkswagen Golf.

Evidence was given that the accused was 'apologetic' and that his insurance policy was for someone over 30 years of age while the accused was 28- years-old.

Defence Keith Brannigan BL argued that the accused only became aware of the Garda car when he stopped behind him.

In court Garda Jude Lyons gave evidence that she saw Garda Mannion following the accused with flashing lights and sirens.

Defence argued that the accused was driving the car of his girlfriend's father and had fully comprehensive insurance in his own car.

The accused in court said that he had been used to driving a van and did not realise how 'nippy' the VW Golf was.

He said: "I don't feel I was a danger to the public. I did not know  that I was doing that speed."

Inspector Patsy Glennon said :"It scares me when you say you did not realise what speed you were doing. It is an outrageous speed."

The court heard how the accused had a number of previous convictions for not having a valid NCT and one for a bald tyre, he had no previous for dangerous driving and no insurance.

Judge Aenghus McCarthy convicted and fined the accused €500 for dangerous driving and he was given the mandatory two years disqualification from driving.

He was convicted and fined €400 for no insurance.  Recognisances in the event of appeal were set at €300.
