A young mother was sentenced to two months in prison and disqualified from driving for ten years at Naas District Court this morning.
The woman with previous convictions for driving under the influence pleaded guilty to failing to appear and driving under the influence of
benzodiazepines on the N4 near Kilcock.
Inspector Patsy Glennon said that the accused appeared to have be having a problem with the clutch of her car. She was arrested when Gardaí noticed that she was driving on the hard shoulder. Evidence was given that she had no insurance.
Defence Solicitor, David Powderly, outlined how the accused has been in custody since July 18.
The court heard how one of her children passed away 18months ago and one is in care.
Defence said:" She is off heroin, her dependence on methadone has greatly reduced."
The court heard how the accused was going to a funeral on the day with her family.
Judge Aenus McCarthy noted that the accused had three previous convictions for no insurance and that she was driving while disqualified at the time.
For not having insurance and driving under the influence , she was convicted and sentenced to two months in prison, taking into account that she has been in prison since July 18. Additionally she was disqualified from driving for ten years concurrently for driving under the influence and without insurance.
Driving without a driving licence resulted in a €200 fine.
