Almost 2,000 Kildare homeowners have spent money on upgrading their homes in the last two-and-a-half years instead of simply moving homes.
The figures, which are published in today's Irish Independent, show that Kildare property owners ranked third in the country- behind Dublin and Cork- for the number of properties that were upgraded under a new lucrative tax break that was designed to bolster the construction sector.
A total of 1,965 homes received upgrades under the scheme, costing €34,750,000. That makes up a sizeable chunk of the €465 million that was spent by counties outside of Dublin since October 2015. The total spent under the new tax break was €801,560,000, with Dublin county equating for €436,460,000 of that figure.
According to the report, it shows that people are no longer 'climbing the property ladder' and are upgrading their own homes rather than buying bigger properties to suit their needs. The figures show that the net spend by Kildare property owners on the work they are undertaking is €17,684, which is well below the national average of €22,419.
