Kildare Co Council is to install secure bike lockers at a public car park in Naas on a pilot basis.
The initiative will be taking place with support from the National Transport Authority (NTA).
The Council said that officials will review the operation of the facilities at the end of 2019.
Cycylists usually pay a fee for for a unique key or code to use the locker.
The lockers would usually have secure locking mechanisms and CCTV to deter any thefts.
The issue emerged during the Maynooth District Committee meeting on Friday when Councillor Réada Cronin asked for an update on the introduction of a public bike scheme for Maynooth.
The Council said officials met with two bike scheme operators in 2018 and are supportive of a trial introduction in Maynooth.
However the Council said it has not had any further engagement with the operators on future proposals to date.
