Residents in a Kildare Town estate have successfully lobbied Kildare Co Council for Clean Up After Your Dog  signs to be erected so that footpaths and common areas are kept clean.

Some families had grown concerned at the amount of dog fouling in the Loughminane Green and Green Road areas over several months.

There is a very active Residents' Association in Loughminane - which had won 2nd Prize for Large/Medium Estates in the Kildare Tidy Towns Awards in 2017.

Representations were made by some residents to local councillors and to the Council on the issue and the signs were erected in recent days.

Section 22 of the Litter Pollution Act 1997 makes it an offence for the person in charge of a dog not to clean up when their dog fouls in a public place.

This applies to public roads, footpaths, public green areas.

Pet owners are obliged to clean up after  animals and dispose of the dirt in a suitable sanitary manner.

Dog dirt is a health hazard to children and adults.

Failure of owners to clean up their dog’s waste can lead to a €150 “on-the-spot” fine or a fine of up to €3,000 if convicted in court.
