Met Eireann has issued a 5-day Status Yellow Weather Warning for Snow and Ice for Kildare and nationwide as a big freeze hits this week.
The state forecaster said the alert is in place from 6am tomorrow [Tuesday] until 6pm on Saturday.
A Weather Warning covering a 5-day period is highly unusual.
Last Monday a 1-day Yellow Weather Warning for Snow and Ice was issued until the following evening.
Last March, a 3-day Status Red Weather Warning was issued before Storm Emma which brought blizzard conditions and record snowfalls.
According to Met Eireann, there will be widespread frosts at night this week and snow will accumulate on the ground.
Forecasters said: "It will be very cold this week with scattered wintry showers, frequent across the southwest, west and north.
"Some accumulations of snow are expected. There will be widespread frost at night with icy stretches on untreated surfaces.
"There is the possibility of a more significant spell of sleet/snow on Thursday."
Meanwhile, today [Monday] is expected to remain very cold with frost and icy patches.
A spokesperson said: "Today will be cold with highest temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees and mostly light northwest winds.
"Icy patches are to form in parts of Ireland on Monday night as temperatures drop to below 0 degrees Celsius.
"Scattered rain showers are to spread across the country overnight with the possibility of some snow fall.
"Many areas will be dry early tonight with clear spells and with frost and icy patches forming quickly as temperatures fall to between -1 and +2 degrees.
"Scattered showers in the west and north will turn to more persistent rain towards midnight and then cross the country overnight, turning wintry in places."
Tuesday
Top temperatures in some counties won't surpass 2 degrees Celsius.
Tuesday night will be colder again, with temperatures dropping to -3C in places. A spokesperson said: "Tuesday night will be very cold with scattered wintry showers and clear spells.
"Lowest temperatures will fall to between zero and -3 degrees with a widespread hard frost."
Wednesday
Met Eireann warned of "severe frost" on Wednesday night as temperatures plunge to as low as -5C.
"Wednesday night will be dry with good clear spells at first and it will turn very cold with lowest temperatures falling to -1 to -5 degrees with a severe frost."
