An all-out strike that was due to take place at 70 Tesco stores in the country has been called off in the last hour.

The cancellation comes after the Mandate Trade Union invited management at the company to attend talks at the Workplace Relations Committee.

Mandate represent the majority of the staff employed at the giant supermarket chain, while the remainder of the staff that were represented by SIPTU had not planned to strike tomorrow. The row centres over the offer of lower wage contracts to staff that have been contracted to the company since 1996.

Three stores in Kildare were due to go on strike tomorrow morning at 7am, although it is unknown whether or not they would have been able to open if the strikes went ahead.

"This afternoon the WRC extended an invitation to Tesco and the Trade Unions to attend a fifth conciliation meeting on Friday 27 May to try reach agreement on the terms for the proposed changes to our pre-1996/97 that affects c300 colleagues of our 14,500 workforce. We have accepted this invitation and we understand that the Trade Unions have as well. Mandate has cancelled its planned industrial action for tomorrow, Thursday 26 May," read a statement from Tesco Ireland.
