Athy man tells Naas Judge that he took too much antipsychotic medication

A young Athy man who  appeared before Naas District Court says that he can't remember trying to persuade TK Maxx staff to give him money for shoes that he had  picked up at the store, and not paid for.

The 22-year-old man is charged with theft of items worth €125.94 at TK Maxx, Newbridge, and dishonestly by deception trying to induce staff at TK Maxx, Newbridge, to get a refund for approximately €39, on May 23, 2018.

Defence Solicitor, Timmy Kennelly, said that the accused did not appear in court the previous week, when due to because he was mugged.

In court, the accused said that he was punched on the nose with a knuckle duster and was mugged, leaving him unable to attend court.

Sgt Brian Jacob outlined that the accused had previous convictions including road traffic.

Defence told the court how the accused suffers from Schizophrenia.

Mr Kennelly said that the accused 'has blackouts' and 'does not remember doing things.'

In court, the accused said: "I do not remember doing it, I took too much medication."

He told the court how he is on anti-psychotic medication and that his mother now gives him the medication as he himself would take too much.

Judge Desmond Zaidan imposed the Probation Act Section 1(1).

Legal aid was assigned.
