The busy vehicle pound in Naas where seized vehicles are brought also has confiscated mobile homes in the high-security compound.

A vehicle can be seized under Section 41 of the Road Traffic Act if they have no tax, insurance or NCT.

However motorhomes can also be seized if they are deemed not road worthy and end up in the pound, located beside the southbound slip road to the M7.

A number of motorhomes have been seen in the compound in recent weeks, as well as crashed vehicles.

The facility has 24-hour security with several CCTV cameras.

Motorhomes have become increasingly common on roads in recent years and many travel on the M7 towards the south and west of the country.

A motorist with no driving licence or with bald tyres will also have a vehicle seized.

It can later cost up to €150 to release a seized car or van from a vehicle pound.

If the vehicle isn't claimed after an initial 24 hour period, there is an additional charge of €35 per day for cars and vans or €50 for HGVs.

In 2016, the total number of vehicles seized in the Kildare Division was 1,155 - or around three vehicles per day on average.

Bomb squad

In February last year, the Army Bomb Squad was called in and a major Garda operation was forced to divert traffic from the area after a suspicious device was found in an impounded car.

Motorists travelling around Naas and surrounding areas were hit by tailbacks for several hours.
