Planning permission is set to be sought for a large €30 million data centre in Celbridge by the end of the year.
The planned State data centre will be in the Backweston Campus in Celbridge if it goes ahead, and consultancy from engineers have already been received by the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform in relation to progressing the project.
The Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Paschal Donohoe, has advised Kildare North election candidate Emmet Stagg that engineering consultant tenders for the Project were received and they are presently being assessed. A Planning application for the Project is due to be lodged by the end of 2018. The Minister further advised Mr Stagg that construction tender documents will be issued in quarter two of 2019 and it is anticipated that on-site work should commence in Q4 2019.
"Data Centres centralise IT operations and equipment and manage and disseminate data. They are essential for housing most critical systems and are vital to the continuity of daily operations. Whilst data centres do not create major full time employment, with facilities when operational typically employing 30 people, they do create substantial construction jobs," stated Mr Stagg.
