Independent Senator Victor Boyhan has welcomed a new internship programme in the Houses of the Oireachtas, specifically tailored for people with intellectual disabilities.

The Oireachtas Work and Learn (OWL) Programme will see ten young people with intellectual disabilities placed across a variety of Houses of the Oireachtas Service offices, where they will gain valuable work experience.

The Houses of the Oireachtas is the first Parliament in the world to host an internship programme of this kind. The goal is to achieve paid employment for the participants following the internship, based on the experience gained working in the Houses.

Speaking following the launch of the OWL Programme Senator Boyhan said: “I am delighted to welcome these ten interns in to our Parliament. It is important that we work towards inclusivity in our society and appropriate that the House of the Oireachtas take leadership in this regard.

“This programme will enable young people gain real transferable work skills and I look forward greatly to working with them.”
