Planners to decide next week on changes to former Nijinsky's niteclub on Curragh

$

0

A decision is due on Thursday in relation to planning permission for changes to the grounds of the former Nijinsky's niteclub - Jockey Hall - on the Curragh.

The 7-bed period home on 3 acres was put up for sale in 2015 with an asking price of €1.5m.

Planning permission has been applied for the site for construction of a sand arena for equestrian exercise purposes.

Planning permission has also been applied to retain an  existing L-shaped single-storey stable building containing seven stables along with a tack room and a feed store.

The owners also want to retain:

  • single-storey stable building,
  • vehicle entrance comprising raised natural stone walls and piers;
  • natural stone boundary walls to the side and rear of the site.

  • Racing lodge

One of the famous racing lodges on the Curragh and a listed building, Jockey Hall dates from the late 1700s.

It was originally built to accommodate both jockeys and horses during racing season at the nearby Curragh Racecourse.

In the 1990s, the property, including a stud farm, was sold off and the house was converted into a restaurant and, subsequently a well-known nightclub called Nijnsky's - after the famous racecourse.

It was was completely refurbished and practically re-built in 2003 under the supervision of a conservation architect.

The floor area spans 7,000 sq.ft. and has panoramic views of the Curragh, including the famous 'Braveheart Hill'.

Features include a geothermal heating system, a walk-in wine cellar and a private pub with a Glasgow Celtic FC theme featuring a €36,000 solid wood bar.

A large sun room overlooks well-maintained gardens and there is garaging for five cars.

The front lawn is decorated with a spectacular water feature.

Senior Football League: Sash lay down early marker after feisty League opener

Sarsfields 0-16

Athy 1-8

EMS Copiers Senior Football League Division 1 Round 1

Sarsfields got their League season off to a perfect start with a relatively comfortable victory over Athy on Saturday evening.

Athy got a second half goal in the shape of Liam McGovern but it was a game Sarsfields dominated for long periods with their first half showing particularly striking.

Ray Cahill ended up with ten points but it was the youthful exuberance alongside him in the team that really shone with Karl Hartley, Cian McQuillian and Brian McDonnell all making their League debuts as Davy Burke’s outfit begin to take shape.

Ray Cahill got the Sash going with a point in the opening minute after he received a pass in space from the impressive Darragh Ryan.

Athy replied with points from a free by James Eaton and an effort from play by Darroch Mulhall but the home side gradually took control from there.

Eight points in a row soon followed with a Cahill free getting the ball rolling before Karl Hartley kicked an excellent score from a difficult angle.

Cahill got four more points during this spell with Matty Byrne and Darragh Ryan also splitting the posts.

Cian Costigan had a goal chance around that period but he had an effort well saved by James Roycroft and he soon had his jersey half ripped as himself and Cathal McCarron got stuck into each other on a couple of occasions.

It wasn’t just the two of them though with various guilty parties across the field  in various incidents but Liam McGovern did get the talk back to football with a free to put an end to a half that was simmering with Sarsfields holding a six point lead.

Athy were a different team in the second period and they dominated the opening quarter with a trio of McGovern frees and a James Eaton 45 narrowing the deficit.

Danny O’Keefe was also out of luck when a pin point ball into his hands resulted in him getting a shot away but John Melia did well to smother the ball to safety.

Sarsfields then began to wrestle control of the game back in their favour with a brace of frees from Cahill and newcomers Hartley and Brian McDonnell on target from play leaving the Sash with a 0-13 to 0-7 lead.

Athy did get a lifeline when a routine looking free from McGovern in the 50th minute somehow ended up in the net with Matty Byrne dropping the ball over the line.

Sarsfields didn’t panic though and they settled this dress rehearsal for the Championship with a couple of late points.

Cahill kicked two more frees while conveniently Hartley curled a lovely effort between the posts after he worked his way into a shooting position.

Athy had the last say with a McGovern free but in a tempestuous enough encounter it was Sarsfields who would have left the happier as they battled to a five point victory.

Sarsfields: John Melia; Cian Scanlon, Sean Campbell, Alan Scully, Cian McQuillian, Shea Ryan, Robbie Confrey, Matty Byrne 0-1, Dean Domican, Brian McDonnell 0-1, Darragh Ryan 0-1, Con Kavanagh, Ray Cahill, 0-10 (0-7fs) Cian Costigan, Karl Hartley 0-3.

Subs used: Eoin Leavy for Scanlon 40 mins, Caoimhin McDonnell for Domican 42 mins, Barry Coffey for McQuillian 42 mins, Darragh McHugh for Byrne 48 mins, Shane Doyle for Hartley 55 mins.

Athy: James Roycroft; David Considine, Cathal McCarron, Killian Mulhall, Ross Bell, Tony Gibbons, Barry Kelly, Paschal Connell, Mick Foley, Liam McGovern 1-5 (0-5fs), Eoghan McGlinchey, James Eaton 0-2 (0-1f, 0-1 45), Darroch Mulhall 0-1, Danny O’Keefe, Cian Reynolds.

Subs used: Tomas Foley for Considine 25 mins, Hugh Mahon for McGlinchey 43 mins.

A brand new Irish play set in the swinging 1960’s pays homage to the golden era of showband music – complete with a live seven-piece showband.

Come along and be transported back to the heady days of “Lawlors Ballroom” in Naas, "Dreamland" in Athy and "The Ritz" in Carlow and relive the magic and nostalgia of the era.

A Likely Story Productions are bringing the sell-out, hit show “The Voice Within – A Showband Story” to VISUAL, Carlow for two nights only at the end of March.

This original play with music, written by company co-founders Carol Gleeson and Helen Spring, had a hugely successful run following its premiere in The Moat Theatre, Naas last October where it played to packed houses for a week.

Set in Donegal in the 1960’s golden era of music, the story follows an unassuming young man who finds himself at the helm of an up and coming showband.

Garnering attention from two local girls, Tommy O’Grady struggles with his new found persona both on and off the stage, and the apparent love triangle that ensues.

Through a series of memorable characters, this play offers a snapshot in time when Ireland was finally starting to find its’ voice and when showband music was the revolutionary language of the people.

Alongside a live 7-piece band on stage and under the musical direction of Dave McGauran, this nostalgic play includes hits such as “The Hucklebuck”, “Rock around the Clock” and “From the Candystore on the Corner to the Chapel on the Hill” among many others.

It also features an original song, mirroring the play’s title “The Voice Within” written by well known Newbridge musician/singer Owen C. Lynch with lyrics also by C. Gleeson and H. Spring.

The play features an impressive central cast of 14 (plus dancers) and a wealth of talented actors from Kildare, Dublin and Kilkenny.

Another All Ireland title for Kildare handballer, Mick Dowling

$

By Gavin Grace

"Veni, Vidi, Vici".......according to Google this phrase was first attributed to Julius Caesar after winning a battle in Asia minor (modern day Turkey). Many people, especially in Britain (unsurprisingly), think it was uttered after he defeated a British army. It’s also a phrase that could be used when describing Mick Dowling's performance yesterday up in Kingscourt, against Tyrone man Conor Kerr in the Emerald Masters A Handball final.

A large Ballymore and Kildare crowd travelled north to see Mick's game and their journey was not in vain. From the start, Mick blitzed the Red Hand county man, with his famed spin serve bewildering his opponent. The serve, combined with plenty of "bottom brick" kill shots saw Mick won the first game to a duck-egg, 21-0.

The second, understandably, was less one sided. Kerr settled into the game and started to use the roof a bit more which paid some dividends. It was a case of damage limitation for the Ulster champion however, as Mick won the second on a scoreline of 21-14 to bag the title.

It's a richly deserved reward for Mick, his application and dedication to the game of Handball is second to none and this title was hard earned. A victory against old sparring partner Robbie McCarthy in the Leinster final followed by a three game tie-break victory against the Munster champion at the Semi-Final stage meant he had to at his very best this season. Maith thú Mick!!

Ballymore also had two players make it to the All-Ireland series in this year’s small alley Championship. Brendan Higginbotham's journey ended at the semi-final stage, he travelled to Cappagh, Limerick to take on John Ryan in the Golden Masters B semi-final. Unfortunately Brendan never got a foothold in the game and came out on the wrong side of a 21-9,21-7 result.

Up to 100 jobs are being created during the construction phase with a further 45-50 jobs created when the station is open and operational.

The speed limit on the stretch of the M9 has been dropped from 120km/hr to 80km/hr limit due to the construction activity.

The service station will be operated by Circle K and will provide a much needed rest and services stop on the M9.

There is currently no motorway stop on the 60km distance between Kill and Carlow.

The new Circle K facility will be accessed from both carriageways via a new interchange.

Kildare 1-13

Down 3-5

Photos by Michelle Sharkey   Match Report Donal Fitzpatrick

Kildare come from behind late on to claim a two point victory over Down in a closely contested game played in Manguard Plus Hawkfield.

Kildare took control of the game and raced into a 5point lead kicking 6 unanswered points after Down got the scoreboard ticking over with the opening point of the game via the boot of Laoise Duffy. The games first goal came the way of the visitors with Rebecca McGuirk getting lobbed by Laoise Duffy bringing Down back into the game against the run of play. Down we're unlucky again with the next attack with Jessica Foys shot coming off the crossbar falling into Shauna Kendrick arms allowing her clear the danger. Both sides again  traded points via Jessica Foy and Ciara Wheeler. A mix up in defence led to the games second goal going Downs way. Kildare were building from the back but an intercepted pass left gaps at the back and with Kildare players committed forward the ball was fed into Laoise Duffy and she made no mistake from close range netting her 2nd goal to give the visitors a one point advantage leading 2.02 to 0.07.

Mikaela McKenna was unlucky not to level matters kicking wide of the post but she made up for that on the resulting kickout. Ciara Wheeler caught it clean feeding the pass to McKenna leaving her one on one with the keeper and blasting low past Orlagh McLogan. The home side were unlucky not to grab another goal before the break with Aoife Rattigan with just the keeper to beat lost control of the ball allowing Down clear the danger.

Kildare led at the break 1.07 to Downs 2.02.

Down got the perfect start to the second period with Anna McKee beating her Marker to the ball and finding herself in acres of space she only had eyes for goal and duly obliged slipping the ball under Rebecca McGuirk and swinging the tie back in her sides favour. That goal wad cancelled out with 3 unanswered Kildare points from McKenna and Curran.  Jessica Foy a constant thorn in Kildare sides leveled the game with two pointed frees. Down we're coming more into the game and pressure was on the Kildare back line. McGuirk was called into action making numerous saves and saving the blushes of mistakes made.

Down pointed again from the boot of Anna McKee giving them the lead for the fourth time in the game. This spurred the home side on heading into the final stages of the game. Louise Scully had her shot come back off the upright, Neasa Dooley was quick to react but as she gathered possession was fouled and Mikaela McKenna pointed the resulting free to level the game. Molly Price who had replaced Aoife Rattigan a few minutes earlier gathered possession made a long lung bursting run and slotted over for an excellent individual score. Indiscipline on Downs part paved the way for another substitute Orlaith Sullivan to slot over the final score with a pointed free to great relief and joy from her teammates to leave the Full Time score. Kildare 1.13 Down 3.05

Kildare have a second win in the league putting them on 6 points ahead of Down + Offaly. Offaly will be Kildares opponents at home next weekend, the refixed game that got abandoned due to snow in round 4. A venue has yet TBC for that game but that aside for now,  A Kildare win and depending on other results in the division will leave the last league game away to Sligo an interesting contest.

Kildare disappoint as Donegal breeze past them to book place in Division 2 Final

$

Kildare have missed out on promotion to the top flight of the Allianz National Football League.

They needed to beat Donegal today to have any chance of going up, and they also needed results to go a certain way elsewhere.

This afternoon at Fr. Tierney Park in Ballyshannon, Donegal breezed past a poor Kildare side to win by 13 points and clinch promotion.

If finished: Donegal 1-20, Kildare 0-10.

Donegal led by nine points to no score after 19 minutes in the first half with the elements behind them.

Neil Flynn finally got a point for Kildare after 24 minutes.

By the break - with Oisin Gallen and Niall O'Donnell both impressing - Donegal led by 0-13 to 0-1.

Jamie Brennan got the Donegal goal in the second half.

Kildare lost both Eoin Doyle and Kevin Flynn to black cards.

Donegal are promoted along with Meath, who have topped the Division 2 table.

Kildare finish fourth in Division 2.

Meath beat Fermanagh by 2-12 to 0-11 in Navan.

The sides now meet in the Division 2 Final next weekend.

Elsewhere in Division 2, Cork beat Armagh by 3-9 (18) to 1-14 (17) but it was not enough to save the Rebel County from the drop to Division 3 while Clare beat Tipperary by 3-15 to 1-19 so the banner county retain their Division 2 status. Tipp are relegated.

Plans have been lodged to replace it with a number of shops, apartments and office units.

The Council had stated in the past that they intended to compulsorily acquire the building under the Derelict Sites Act, 1990.

The planning documents state that the developer wishes to demolish the existing derelict building/hall replace it with new four-storey building containing four shop units, two office units and six apartments.

Also proposed are bin and bicycle spaces.

Donegal back in Division 1 as they get the better of dismal Kildare

Donegal 1-20

Kildare 0-10

Allianz National Football League Division 2 Round 7

Kildare’s promotion hopes went up in smoke in Ballyshannon as Donegal easily got the better of them to mark their return to Division 1 at the first time of asking.

In contrast to the corresponding fixture last year which went to the wire, Donegal were much the better side throughout and from the get go they were never really in any danger.

It brings an end to a desperately disappointing League campaign for Kildare where they underperformed in a number of games and Cian O’Neill will have a fair job in lifting the spirits of a team that look bereft of confidence before the Leinster Championship opener against Wicklow in seven weeks.

The weather had a huge impact on the game with a gale force breeze blowing into the scoreboard end in Ballyshannon and Donegal made full use of it in the opening period after winning the toss as they raced into a huge twelve point lead.

Despite the conditions Kildare were awful in that first half as Donegal walked through them at will as the visitors only notched a solitary Neil Flynn free on the scoreboard.

Incidentally Kildare probably should have kicked the first point as Kevin Flynn who was a late introduction for Mark Hyland broke the line but he pulled a shot badly wide.

Donegal then went into turbo mode as they kicked the first nine points of the game.

Jamie Brennan got Donegal on the scoreboard before the likes of Niall McDonnell, Oisin Gallen, Hugh McFadden and Michael Murphy followed suit as the game was all but put to bed before Kildare even noticed.

Kildare barely got forward in the half and their luck was summed up by both Neil Flynn and Kevin Feely missing frees.

Flynn did eventually land a placed ball but the Tir Chonaill men quickly retaliated in the form of McDonnell, Gallen, Ryan McHugh and Daire O’Baoill as the hosts took a 0-13 to 0-1 lead into the break after a dreadful first half from Cian O’Neill’s men.

Kildare did have the wind in the second half but they still needed everything to go their way and after Paddy Brophy kicked a point from a mark there was some hope.

Donegal responded with Gallen and Murphy both kicking points while Jason McGee had a goal chance well saved by Mark Donnellan.

It was then officially curtains for Kildare in the 43rd minute when Kevin Flynn intentionally tripped Michael Murphy and it was even more unnecessary when he was on a yellow card and he duly got his marching orders for a red card and with Eoin Doyle also getting a black during this period, the Lillywhites were down to 13 men for a period.

Ironically they done relatively ok as they scored six of the next seven points with sub Adam Tyrrell making a big impact for the second game in a row with three super points as well as Flynn, Jimmy Hyland and Cian O’Donoghue finding the target either side of Donegal point from Ryan McHugh.

That got Kildare back to within nine points but Donegal were soon clear again when Jamie Brennan received a pass over the top from McGee and the corner forward made no mistake in finding the net.

McHugh and McGee then quickly added on points after the goal which gave Donegal a 1-18 to 0-8 lead before Kildare fired back in the shape of Tyrrell and Hyland.

Chris Healy missed a late goal chance for Kildare when his shot was expertly pushed away by Donegal stopper Shaun Patton and the Ulster side rounded off the game with points from Murphy and Caolan McGonagle as they comprehensively won on a 1-20 to 0-10 scoreline.

Donegal: Shaun Patton; Paddy McGrath, Brendan McCole, Eoghan Ban Gallagher, Daire O’Baoill 0-1, Leo McLoone, Ryan McHugh 0-3, Hugh McFadden 0-1, Jason McGee 0-2, Niall O’Donnell 0-3, Stephen McMenamin, Caolan McGonagle 0-1, Oisin Gallen 0-4, Michael Murphy 0-4 ( 0-2fs, 0-1 45), Jamie Brennan 1-1.

Subs used: Neil McGee for McCole 58 mins, Eoin McHugh for O’Boill 60 mins, Paul Brennan for Gallen 63 mins, Frank McGlynn for McLoone 66 mins, Caolan Ward for R.McHugh 68 mins,

Subject to completion of all necessary activities, the next section of M7 Westbound mainline traffic will commence movement onto the new carriageway surface, adjacent to the new central median, from 6am on Monday morning.

The first stage will involve splitting the traffic lanes on the Westbound M7 carriageway, on approach to Junction 10 (Naas South) for approx. 2.5km, through the interchange to after Junction 10 (Naas South) on-slip.

Motorists are advised that although both Westbound lanes are for the M7/M8/M9; those wishing to exit at Junction 10 (Naas South) should take the left hand lane only.

This arrangement will facilitate the completion of the new middle lane in this section and, following these works, two lanes over this section will run on the new surface, adjacent to the median.

A minimum of two lanes will be maintained during peak hours of 06.00hrs to 22.00hrs at all times.

Once traffic has been moved across, works will continue to the adjacent verge/hard shoulder areas, which will include for the tie-in of new slip lanes.

The Council added that any inconvenience caused to the public is regretted.
