KCC set to install more sheep grids to 'secure the Curragh'

Kildare County Council have said that they will be installing two more sheep grids in the Curragh to help secure the area.

The council have been asked to take action to make the Curragh a safer area for driving, and a number of sheep grids will be installed as part of that process.

Cllr Suzanne Doyle asked a meeting of the Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District what sort of schedule that the council were operating from when installing the sheep grids on the Curragh, and if they could list the order of their priority.

The council report stated that the Municipal District Office currently has funding for the installation of two new sheep grids at locations agreed with the members, one at Lurg Lane and another at Brownstown Cross.

The installation of both of these grids will be dependent on the outcome of site investigation works at these locations due to the presence of sewage rising mains. The Municipal District Office has also issued tenders to reconstruct and repair two grids which have failed. One at the rear of the Curragh Racecourse on the R413 and another opposite Kildare Chilling on the L-7022.

Following the above, an additional 5 grids are required to be installed to fully secure the Curragh.

Galway lead Kildare at the break in Lilywhites' last league game of the year

Kildare     0-5

Galway     0-8

Allianz NFL Division 1

Galway lead Kildare by three points at the break in the Lilywhites' final game in Division 1. With the home side already relegated, there is a rather subdued atmosphere in St Conleth's Park, and the sometimes sterile play of Galway has only added to that.

Galway opened the scoring with a couple of points from the lively Patrick Sweeney, but Kildare responded well through scores from Eanna O'Connor, who is making his first start for the county in the league, and Tommy Moolick.

It was mostly Galway for the remainder of the half, with the Tribesmen breaking through on numerous occasions and clipping over tidy scores, with Sean Kelly hitting two impressive points, but he also missed a gilt edged chance on goal midway through the half.

Kildare hit back before the break with two fine points in a row as O'Connor nailed one from play and Johnny Byrne curled over an effort from distance, but they will need to be much better in the second half if they are to get anything from this game.

Kildare's league season ends in more disappointment as Galway claim 6-point win

$

Kildare     0-10

Galway     0-16

Allianz NFL Division 1

And there it ends. Kildare’s seven games in the top tier of league football finishes with seven defeats, and while this game mattered not a jot in terms of standings, a bit of encouragement could have been taken from a win. As it happened there was very little positives to take, as Kildare shot 14 wides, many of which were from crazy positions, and they never looked like winning this game.

Cian O’Neill called some of the Leinster Championship winning Moorefield contingent into the panel ahead of the game, with Eanna O’Connor starting in the forward line and Mark Dempsey among the substitutes, while James Murray was unwell during the week and unable to take his position among the replacements.

Aaron O’Neill was also drafted in for his league debut, and the Carbury teenager cut an extremely composed figure between the posts, while his booming kickouts certainly caught the eye. It was a highly impressive debut from a player who has yet to play at senior level for his club.

Mark Dempsey, Ruadhan Ó’Giollain and Daniel Courtney also made their first league appearances for the county off the bench, so this day will at least be a memorable on for them.

Galway lined out in a fashion that was almost like the GAA version of ‘Total Football’ without the entertainment of it, spreading their players around the field in an almost circular formation as players interchanged positions all the time. While they lacked thrust for long periods, they did manage to break the lines on enough occasions to put Kildare to the sword.

They were in behind the Lilywhites backline in the opening two minutes when Patrick Sweeney broke through and blazed over, and the same player doubled their advantage two minutes later.

Kildare responded with a couple of scores as O’Connor opened their account through a free and Tommy Moolick slotted over from close range following a fine Crossfield pass from Eamonn Callaghan.

The visitors took control of the game for a spell after that however, and midfielder Eoin Finnerty broke through the lines to clip over a close range score before Johnny Duane angled over a lovely effort from 40 metres out. Padraic Cunningham stretched their lead to three points, and Galway were full value for their lead after dominating possession and territory for the opening quarter hour.

Kildare offered some response as another huge kickout from Aaron O’Neill landed near the Galway ’45 and was knocked on to Callaghan, and he teed up Jimmy Hyland to slot over to mark his first start in a Kildare jersey with a point.

There could have been a goal at the other end when the ball fumbled into the path of Sean Kelly, but the lively corner-forward angled his shot narrowly wide as O’Neill closed down on him. They did manage three points in a row after that however, with Seán Armstrong knocking over a free before Kelly showed his technique with a couple of lovely scores from tight angles.

The home side did at least finish the half strongly as O’Connor raised a white flag with a good strike from the left wing and Johnny Byrne floated over a long range score following a brilliant crossfield pass from Paul Cribbin.

Galway walked out onto the field in a languid style for the beginning of the second half in a manner that suggested that they weren’t all that interested, and with the scores finely poised at 0-8 to 0-5, there was plenty of incentive for Kildare to get on top.

That didn’t happen however, and Galway nailed three points within four minutes of the restart that effectively put the tie to bed. Armstrong curled over a wonderful effort before half-time substitute Shane Walsh split the posts with a free off the ground, and Armstrong added another to stretch the gap to six points.

Kildare’s best score of the game arrived in the 42nd minute when Paul Cribbin landed an audacious point from out on the right wing, but it was one of a number of speculative efforts that were taken on by Kildare players in the second half, and one of the only ones that went over.

Cunningham and Brophy traded points at either end after that, before substitute Frankie Burke launched over a superb effort from distance to widen the gap between the sides to five points.

Kildare threatened a comeback briefly as another debutant, Daniel Courtney raided up the right wing to hit the target, and they came close to goal when Fionn Dowling and Kevin Flynn both had shots blocked. The margin was just three points when O’Connor pierced the posts with a ’45, but Galway rallied with scores from Adrian Varley and Cian D’Arcy to ease towards home.

There were flashpoints at the end as a number of players wrestled each other on the ground – not uncommon in games involving Galway – but the game concluded without much excitement for the small crowd in Newbridge.

Scorers for Kildare: E O'Connor 0-4(1f, 1'45), J Byrne, P Cribbin, D Courtney, T Moolick, J Hyland and P Brophy 0-1 each.

Scorers for Galway: S Armstrong 0-3(1f), S Kelly, P Cunningham and P Sweeney 0-2 each, F Burke, A Varley, S Walsh(1f), M Daly, C D'Arcy and E Finnerty 0-1 each.

Kildare U14 ladies pipped by Dublin in championship thriller

Dublin 2-10
Kildare 2-8
Leinster U14 Football Championship
Leinster champions Dublin were given a scare by Kildare in this opening round Leinster u14 championship tie played in a sunny IT Blanchardstown on Saturday afternoon. In the last play of the game Dublin keeper Molly O'Brien denied Kildare the spoils with a quick reaction save to help her side run out 2point winners.
Dublin raced into an early five-point lead, and having already missed a penalty the signs looked ominous for Kildare after 15 minutes of play. Abby Pender settled the Kildare nerves with a fine point from play but Dublin were quick to respond tagging on another point to keep the gap at five between the sides.
Kildare were unlucky not to have had a goal with their next attack with the shot just scraping wide of the right up right. On the resumption of play, from the kick out Kildare won possession and Sophie Nagi slipped the ball past the Dublin Keeper.
Both sides traded points again through Dublins Shannon Russell and Kildare's Orlaith O'Mahony. Dublin finished the half strong with Russell pointing her fifth of the half through a free and causing real concern for the Kildare backs, Ava Lambe finishing the halfs scoring to see her side lead at the break by 0-9 to 0-2.
Dublin opened the second half with a quick goal from the ever dangerous Shannon Russell. Both sides again traded points before Russell was on hand to grab her second goal of the game, the ball had come off the crossbar from an initial shot Dublin recycled possession for Russell to shoot through a mass of players to see her strike hit the back of the Kildare net. Dublin now leading Kildare by 10 points.
The game turned completely on its head for the remainder of the half as Kildare rang the changes, upped the tempo and kept Dublin scoreless for the last 20 minutes as they started to eat into the Dublin lead. Caitlin Kennedy led her team and tagged on a point this was followed by a great team goal worked from defence for Orlaith O'Mahony to see her shot have the umpire raise the green flag.
The comeback continued more points followed from Niamh Hayes,Ruth Sergent and substitutes Saoirse Hogan and Rebecca Devine. Dublin defended well but we're under pressure from a Kildare side in search of what would be a winning goal.
With the game now into injury time a high ball dropped into the Dublin square amd a Kildare player jumped highest, palmed the ball to direct it goalwards, the crowd were on their feet, was this to be Kildares day to grab a late winner?
Unfortunately for Kildare, Dublin keeper Molly O'Brien made a good reaction save and clear her lines. The final whistle blew and a relived Dublin hanging on to run out two-point winners.
Both teams are to be commended for an excellent and exciting exhibition of football that had both sets of supporters enthralled throughout. Dublin will be relieved to have hung on in the finish and Kildare will go home, despite the loss, very happy in their battling performance.
Next up for Kildare is an away trip to neighbours Meath on April 7, venue and time to be concluded.

O'Neill insists there are no disciplinary issues in Kildare camp following Killarney night out

$

0

Kildare manager Cian O’Neill insisted that there are no disciplinary issues in the Kildare senior football squad after Sunday’s defeat to Galway.

That defeat concluded the Lilywhites’ participation in this year’s league, with Kildare losing all seven of their games on route to relegation to Division 2.

Rumours circulated about a recent night out following the defeat to Kerry on St Patrick’s Day in Tralee, but O’Neill told the media following the Kerry game that there are no issues at present.

“No, there’s no disciplinary problem in the camp,” said O’Neill.

“If you’re referring to last week, basically we went out for a few drinks as a group – I think the lads deserved it. We were staying in Killarney after the match which is very different to staying somewhere before a match – you don’t even leave the hotel. That’s what happened last week, obviously there will be stories, there will be discussions,” he continued.

O’Neill went on to explain that he and Kerry manager Eammon Fitzmaurice had agreed to play a challenge match on Sunday morning to give panel members who hadn’t seen much game time during the league a chance to get a run. Kerry lost a number of players to injury during their defeat to Dublin the previous weekend however, so Fitzmaurice called the game off.

O’Neill had a full group of players down in Kerry that weekend, so a decision was made to let the players blow off some steam after what has been a gruelling campaign.

“We purposely brought down the full group last week because we had a match against the Kerry selection that wasn’t on the 26 on Sunday morning. Unfortunately, they picked up a rake of injuries the week before and Eammon pulled the match on the Tuesday because they didn’t have enough,” explained O’Neill.

“It was unfortunate because we were going to have a match at 11am on the Sunday, so we made the decision as a management that we’re bringing everyone down, we’re after being beaten – mathematically we were relegated – so we said we’d have a few drinks together and put it behind us and get on the bus the next morning and go back to Kildare.”

Asked if any players were dropped for the clash with Galway due to disciplinary issues, O’Neill said that the reason behind the six changes from the team the previous weekend was to give as many panel members as possible a run out, while there were also some injury concerns.

“What we wanted to do was to give to do was just to give lads an opportunity who hadn’t been on the 26 – we wanted to give them an opportunity to get on the team. We have 34, so to do that some lads had to step out to let others step in.”
